Paver Driveways in Jacksonville: Why a Driveway Base Is Not a Patio Base

You have probably watched a paver patio go in on your street: same crew, same pallets of stone, same plate compactor running for two days. So when you start planning a paver driveway, the natural assumption is that you are ordering a bigger version of that patio.

You are not. The real decision is whether the crew builds a pedestrian pavement or a vehicular one, and almost everything below the surface changes with the answer. Same stone yard, same tools, different engineering, none of it visible once the pavers are down.

The short version. A driveway carries thousands of pounds through four small contact patches, in the same two tracks, thousands of times a year. That changes the excavation depth, the base thickness, the compaction passes, the paver unit, the laying pattern, the edge detail and the pitch. A driveway built to patio standards fails at the edges and in the turning areas, usually within a few wet seasons.

Wheel loads are not foot traffic

A person on a paver patio spreads their weight over two shoes and wanders at random, so the surface rarely sees the same load twice. A vehicle differs in three ways.

Magnitude: a half ton pickup puts well over a thousand pounds through each tire before you load the bed, and a trailer tongue on the ball adds several hundred more at one point.

Repetition: your tires track the same two lines every day, so this is a fatigue problem, not a strength problem, and fatigue rearranges an underbuilt base over years while nothing looks wrong.

Direction: foot traffic pushes straight down. A vehicle also pushes sideways and backwards, braking at the garage, accelerating onto the street, scrubbing sideways whenever the wheel turns while the car is barely moving. Horizontal force is what pulls a paver field apart, and a patio never sees any.

A driveway digs deeper, and the subgrade gets checked first

Excavation depth is arithmetic: base thickness, plus bedding layer, plus paver, measured down from finished grade. A Jacksonville patio lands around seven to nine inches. A driveway is closer to eleven to sixteen, because the base underneath is roughly double and the paver thicker.

Then there is what you find at the bottom. Northeast Florida hands us fine, loose sand, what everyone here calls sugar sand. It feels solid dry and behaves like nothing when saturated, and our seasonal water table comes up to meet it. Newer neighborhoods add a second problem: in Nocatee, Julington Creek and the World Golf Village corridor, the driveway strip is builder backfill and utility trench spoil, the least consolidated soil on the lot.

So the subgrade gets proof rolled, soft pockets get dug out, and a nonwoven geotextile separation fabric goes down before any stone arrives.

That fabric adds no strength; it keeps two materials from becoming one. Without it, every wheel pass pumps fine sand up into the voids between the crushed stone, and a graded base turns into dirty sand that no longer drains or locks up. On a patio the fabric is a judgment call. Under a driveway in sugar sand it is not.

Base thickness is a load calculation, not a habit

The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association, which now carries the ICPI interlocking pavement guidance, publishes minimum base thicknesses for ideal conditions: four inches for walkways and patios, six for residential driveways, eight for parking lots and residential streets.

Ideal means a strong, well draining subgrade in a climate that does not freeze. The guidance is to add roughly half again for each of those three conditions your site does not have: strength, drainage, freezing.

Northeast Florida gets exactly one of the three for free: we have no freeze problem. What we routinely fail is subgrade strength, and on low lots we fail drainage too. That is how a six inch published minimum becomes the eight to twelve inches of compacted base we build under a Jacksonville driveway, and more where the proof roll comes back soft.

Which aggregate fills that depth is a separate decision, and we broke down crushed stone against gravel against the panel systems there. One of the three is a pedestrian product, not rated for vehicles.

Compaction happens in lifts or it does not happen

You cannot compact ten inches of stone by running a plate over the top of it. Compaction energy dies off with depth, so the bottom of a deep lift stays loose no matter how many passes you make.

Base goes in a couple of inches at a time, each lift compacted before the next is placed. A ten inch driveway base is five or six separate compaction operations, not one.

Equipment matters too: industry guidance puts the floor at a plate compactor developing at least 5,000 pounds of centrifugal force, and consumer rental machines are usually well under that. Vehicular pavement also gets compacted to a higher target density than pedestrian pavement.

Nobody can inspect this stage afterward. Once the pavers are down, no one can tell how many lifts went underneath, which is why it belongs on your list of questions before you hire anyone, alongside the contractor red flags we published.

A patio paver under a car is a paver that breaks

Patio units are commonly 45 to 50 mm thick, roughly one and three quarter to two inches. Vehicular units start at 60 mm, about two and three eighths inches, and step up to 80 mm where trucks, RVs or boat trailers are part of the picture.

Thickness is only half the specification. The other half is proportion. The industry rule of thumb divides the unit's longest dimension by its thickness: above about four, it does not belong under a vehicle. A twenty four inch plank paver at one and seven eighths inches thick lands near thirteen, which is why large format slabs that look so good on a modern patio crack under a tire.

Pattern follows the same logic. Vehicular fields go down in a 45 or 90 degree herringbone, the one common pattern with no continuous joint line running in the direction of travel, so braking and turning forces lock into the field instead of walking a whole row forward. Running bond and stack bond look clean, and creep.

A permeable driveway is not the same surface with holes in it, it is a different structural system with an open graded base built to store and release water, so the base changes with the paver.

Bedding sand is one inch, screeded, and never compacted first

The bedding layer is the thinnest thing in the assembly and the one most often built wrong. It is one inch of washed concrete sand, screeded to a uniform depth, and it is not compacted before the pavers go down.

A bedding layer wandering between one inch and three inches consolidates unevenly the first time a loaded vehicle crosses it, and you get ruts that trace the screed rather than the base. Sand is not a leveling compound. If the base is not flat and true, burying the problem in extra sand does not fix it, it just schedules it.

The bedding does get compacted, but afterward, through the pavers, on the final passes that drive the joint sand home.

The drive edge has nothing holding it back, and neither does the apron

A patio usually gets help on a couple of sides: a house wall, pool coping, a step. A driveway has lawn or planting bed down both long sides and public asphalt at the end, so nothing on that perimeter contains anything and every load pushes the outer rows outward.

Edge restraint is what answers it. On a driveway that means a vehicular rated restraint anchored with long spikes, or a concrete toe poured against the outer course. The detail most often skipped is underneath: the compacted base has to extend several inches past the paver edge so those spikes bite into compacted stone. The apron, where your driveway meets the street, is the hardest working area on the property. Every vehicle crosses that line, most while turning, and there is often a small vertical change at the pavement edge. That transition gets a concrete toe or a soldier course set in concrete, never a plastic rail. Work reaching into the public right of way generally needs approval from the City of Jacksonville or St. Johns County, so establish that boundary before the design is final.

Pitch, the garage door, and the places where cars turn

The garage end deserves attention for two reasons. The last several feet in front of the door sit on backfill placed against the house foundation, the loosest ground on the lot, and that strip is where every vehicle brakes. It should get the deepest base on the job, not the shallowest.

Grade at the door is pass or fail. Pavers finish flush with or just below the garage slab edge, and the surface has to fall away from the opening. Where the lot runs downhill toward the garage and pitch alone cannot solve it, a trench drain across the opening is the answer.

The fall follows the same rule as any paver field, pitched away from the structure, and our paver drainage guide covers the ICPI figure and how to check it. A driveway needs a cross slope on top of that, so water leaves sideways onto the lawn instead of running the length of the drive to your door.

Then there is turning. The hardest force a paver surface takes is not weight, it is torque. When a driver turns the wheel while the vehicle is barely moving, the tire scrubs sideways across the surface. Do that every morning backing out of the same bay and the joint sand grinds away and units start to rotate. Herringbone bond, a thicker unit and full depth base under the turning area are the answers, and they have to be designed in.

Point loads count too: a trailer tongue jack or a service truck outrigger drops enormous load onto one or two units, so tell your installer where those land.

Frequently asked questions

Two inch units, around 50 mm, are a patio product. Residential vehicular guidance starts at 60 mm, about two and three eighths inches, and moves to 80 mm where heavier vehicles are expected. A 50 mm unit might survive a light car on a perfect base, but it has no margin for a turning tire or a point load.

Add the layers: base, plus one inch of bedding sand, plus the paver, measured from finished grade. A Jacksonville patio comes out around seven to nine inches. A driveway is closer to eleven to sixteen, because the base underneath is eight to twelve inches instead of four to six. If the subgrade proof rolls soft, it goes deeper.

From the bottom up: a nonwoven geotextile separation fabric over the prepared subgrade, then compacted crushed aggregate placed in lifts, then one inch of screeded washed concrete sand, then the pavers, then joint sand. Which aggregate to use is its own decision, and we compared the common options separately.

That question comes from poured concrete, where four inches is typical for cars, six for heavier vehicles, and the slab is the structure. A paver driveway works the other way around: the pavers are the wearing surface and the compacted base underneath is the structure. The number that decides performance is base depth, not surface thickness.

Yes, and there is no version of a driveway where it is optional. The perimeter rows have nothing containing them, so the restraint, plus compacted base extending past the paver edge to anchor it, is the only thing stopping the field from spreading under load.
